Mining News: Groverake Mine under threat

Mine-explorers usually have a passion for what remains above ground as well as delving deep into the earth. Groverake Fluorspar Mine closed in 1999 and has the last surviving headframe in the Northern Orefield. There are currently concerns that authorities are seeking the demolition and clearance of the remaining surface structures of this mine, and these have increased since an alleged arson attack saw one of the old mine buildings being burnt out.

But there is growing opposition to the plans which would see the removal of the headstocks and all other buildings. A campaign has started to try to save what is left before it is too late. The Durham Cave and Mine Club has set up a Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/groups/193413674329564/
