For many mine explorers, Nenthead in Cumbria is the Mecca of British mining, with a vast amount of underground exploration potential.

For those who prefer an easier introduction to the mines, the open days run by the Nenthead Mines Conservation Society, are an attractive option. Carrs Show Mine is an established site where you can arrange a trip with prior notice. There is a normal show mine visit, or you can book a Special Adventure Trip. The open days for 2016 are:

  • 27 March 2016
  • 1st May 2016
  • 29th May 2016 – help celebrate Unesco Geoparks Week
  • 3rd July 2016
  • 31st July 2016
  • 28th August 2016
  • 10th and 11th September 2016 – join us on Heritage Open Days
  • 23rd October 2016

The site is open from 1030 to 1700 on Open Days.  Mine trips start at 1045, 1215, 1345, and 1515.

It is best to book your mine trip by phoning 07519836019. You will need to provide your name and the number of people in the party.  You can just turn up on the day but you might not get the trip of your first choice. You should aim to arrive 15 minutes before the start of your mine trip.

The mine tour runs for about 90 minutes. Tea, coffee, cakes and books are available for sale. There are toilets on the site.

If you would like a Special Adventure Trip, the cost is £10. It is also possible to arrange a custom trip tailored to suit your group. Visit the Society’s website for more information. Visit The Nenthead Mines Open Days webpage.
