The planned stabilisation work in Cwmystwyth Mine, reported here in December 2015, has now started. Roy Fellows reports:
Work started on 10th April. Please note that the climbing route above the skipway up to Roman Level is out of bounds due to the work being done to reinforce the big stull and to support the sagging timber.
I am extremely grateful for the help of Steve Holding and Alan Robinson (Shropshire Caving and Mining Club). Despite two volunteers being absent due to the prevailing current lurgy, the three of us managed to get all the materials into the mine. I stayed on working until 18.30 to get the shuttering built ready for the concrete pouring.
The timbers showed no resistance to 5 inch nails which graphically demonstrates their poor condition.
Will visitors to the mine say clear of the work area please, and don’t touch anything.
