The Derbyshire Caving Club (DCC) are holding an open weekend at Alderley Edge, Cheshire on the weekend of 23rd to 24th April 2015 when you will be able to pay a visit to Engine Vein, one of the extensive series of mines under the steep sandstone outcrop that overlooks the Cheshire plain. The mines have been worked from the Bronze Age to the early parts of the 20th century. The DCC runs access to the mines on behalf of the National Trust.
The visit is an absolute must for anyone who has read and enjoyed Alan Garner’s children’s classics, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and The Moon of Gomrath.
You can make a booking on the DCC website here and the DCC’s website contains an absolute wealth of information about the mines and their history. If you’d like to visit one of the mines, but can’t make the open weekend, you can contact the DCC to make separate arrangements.
