Mines in Surrey : AditNow talk scheduled for March 4th

Hearthstone factory at Reigate, early 1900s.

The hearthstone mines at Betchworth in Surrey will be the subject of the next online presentation in the ongoing series by AditNow members.

Darkness Below editor Peter Burgess will present the talk, which will describe the nature of the hearthstone trade, what it was used for, where it was found, and how it was extracted. The history of the two mines that were worked near Betchworth will be the focus of the second part of the talk, using surviving archives from the company that operated one of the mines which closed in around 1950. The talk will commence at 20:30 on 4th March 2021 and will use the Zoom platform. Details of how to log in to the session will be available on the evening of 3rd March, and will be added to the Darkness Below events calendar entry. You can also find out about this and other talks as they are published in the AditNow Facebook group.

The previous presentation in early February on the now closed ironstone mines in Lincolnshire by Les Riley was an excellent insight into the history of the extensive workings there, and the challenges they continue to present today.

Offers of further talks, short or long, are always welcome. Please contact Chris Jones via the AditNow Facebook group, or me via the Darkness Below website and I will be pleased to put you in touch. email: [email protected]
